Absolute Energy’s Support Helps Speed Skater Mikaela Macdonald Chase Her Dreams 

At Absolute Energy, we’re always proud to support young people in our community who show dedication, drive, and passion. One of those people is 17-year-old Mikaela Macdonald, a talented speed skater from Nelson. 

Mikaela’s Journey in Speed Skating 

Mikaela has been speed skating since the age of 7. Over the last decade, she’s worked hard to become one of the country’s top junior athletes in the sport. Now 17, she holds a long list of national titles and continues to push herself with every race. 

Speed skating is a fast-paced sport that requires skill, stamina, and strategy. Mikaela says it’s the adrenaline, tactics, and speed that keep her hooked. She currently holds the Junior Ladies (under 19) national titles in the Banked Track 200 dual time trial, 500m, 1000m, and 5000m points race. She also holds the Open Ladies 15,000m Elimination title on the road and the Senior Ladies Marathon Champion. 

Balancing Costs and Competition 

Speed skating in New Zealand is entirely self-funded. There is no central funding body, which means that every cost from training and gear to travel and competition fees comes out of the athlete’s pocket. Mikaela travels around the country to compete, and this year hopes to represent New Zealand in Korea and China. 

We understand how tough it can be for young athletes to fund their passion while also balancing school and everyday life. When we heard about Mikaela’s achievements and goals for the year ahead, we were more than happy to contribute. Our donation may be a small part of her overall journey, but we know that every bit helps.
